Every month we take a close look at a tenant that will be joining Fishers District. This month we’re featuring Sun King Brewing Company for our Tenant Teaser in June. Sun King Brewing Company is an Indianapolis-based craft brewery with a focus on continually creating traditional seasonal and unique specialty beer. Sun King rolled their first keg of beer out of the door in July 2009 and since that time has grown into one of Indiana’s largest and most award-winning breweries, with multiple medals at the Great American Beer Festival® and the World Beer Cup®.
Start with what you know
Clay and his partner,Dave Colt, started working together about 14 years ago in a brewery in downtown Indianapolis. At the end of a long day they asked each other a question that would set up the creation of Sun King. What would you do if you could start your own brewery? After three years of talking about what they would do they created Sun King Brewing Company in downtown Indianapolis.
Not just Downtown
Sun King isn’t a stranger to the Indy region or expanding their horizons. You can enjoy a Sun King beer at over 1,000 locations across Indiana, Louisville, and Chicago in addition to their three store locations in downtown Indianapolis, Carmel, and a small batch location in Fishers. With the opening of Fishers District they will be closing their Fishers location and moving it into Fishers District.
The Vision for Fishers District
We’re a brewery first and foremost and we like to have spaces that represent the environment that we’re in. - Clay Robinson, CEO Sun King Brewing Company
Sun King is poised on the edge of the Yard area of Fishers District, overlooking it as it sits attached to Fishers Test Kitchen which is a culinary incubator for up and coming entrepreneurs in the Indianapolis region. It features an upstairs level dedicated to event space that people can rent, a larger open industrial design with the brewery area itself behind glass. The location will have over 30 beers available on tap for customers to try while enjoying a brewery environment. It’s expected that Sun King will increase the staff in their new location since the need for servers and management staff will be increased.
Keeping it local
Sun King has a very local orientated focus when it comes to how they view their business and their community. Right now they work with over 500 organizations in central Indiana including non-profits and community organizations to help them share their message and raise funds. The new location in Fishers District will help increase their ability to host new events in new locations while being connected to the community green space just out the front door.
Outside of community organizations Sun King also likes to work with other local businesses including food vendors, other brewers, and retailers. With being so close to other local tenants it was natural that projects and partnerships would form. One such project comes from a partnership between Sun King and Huse Culinary Group, the people behind St. Elmos, Harry and Izzy’s, and 1933 Lounge when it debuts in Fishers District. This collaboration has lead to single barrel batches of bourbon barrels from Kentucky. Sun King is taking the barrels and aging beer in them to have on tap at the new Fishers District location.
We’re proud to have been given the opportunity to showcase Sun King Brewing Company and are excited to see them opening at Fishers District.
